Jigs & Rigs Arts & Music Festival 2011
Stewards Guide
First of all thank you very much for volunteering as a Steward at this year’s festival.
When you arrive in the field please make yourself known at festival HQ & sign
up on the time sheet for any vacant shifts that remain that you wish to volunteer for.
Question: What is your task as a steward?
Answer Primarily the safety of festival goers (Fg's)
- Be a Friendly face & most importantly! have a good time while you're stewarding.
- be visible! fG's need to be able to approach you if they are in difficulty always
try to remain in plain sight in your sector.
- keep access, amenities & Emergency exits clear of tents & obstructions at all times.
- keep non designated camping area’s clear of tents.
- ensure that fires are lit only in designated areas.
- be vigilant for anyone who may be in distress through overindulgence,
or, exposure to the elements (sunstroke, or hypothermia etc etc...)
- Lend a helping hand with Fg's struggling with equipment - especially getting over the moss
(see attached site map)
- know the location of all fire equipment should it be required in an emergency.
- be able to direct Fg's to amenities like water & toilets (see attached site map) &
Festival HQ.
Question: What are you not expected to do?
Answer Deal with any situation in which you feel threatened.
First of all, and this is important to say, in all the years we've have been running this
festival no steward has ever been exposed to a hostile situation. Ever. Full Stop.
Everyone pretty much understands that we're all here for a good time not a hard time!
In all dealings with Fg's use your teams radio communications as a pointer,
eg - point it at a tent that you want moved, or an access point that must be kept clear.
Should this situation ever arise in which you feel vulnerable or threatened?
Do not engage! Just simply walk away. When you are a safe distance away report to HQ
via your comms, giving your location and a brief Sit Rep (situation report)
security will be sent to assist immediately.
If required, we have ways of removing trouble makers from the island.
Question: What is expected of you?
First and foremost sobriety when your shift starts.
No alcohol while on duty please - don't be standing around with tins of beer in your hand.
Be friendly!
Equipment.
Everyone will be issued a high visibility jacket for the duration of their shift,
these must be signed for and returned when your shift ends. Hot drinks and snacks will be
provided at the festival office during your shift.
Each team will also be issued a radio and given instruction on how to use it,
again like your high visibility jacket this must be signed out and in again when returned to
HQ.
Please make sure you have your own torch - this is so important it can't be stressed enough.
Make sure you have suitable footwear & clothing - weather can & will change very quickly
on the island.
Thanks again for Volunteering at Jigs & Rigs 2011.
